The ArmaLite AR-9 was a prototype semi-automatic 12 gauge shotgun that was made by ArmaLite. It was designed by Burton Miller in 1955 and was ready to go into production, but it was never released. It was later sold as the ArmaLite AR-17.
The AR-9 was recoil operated and interestingly enough, it borrows the ArmaLite AR-10's rotating bolt. It was made largely from aluminum and fiberglass (much like the ArmaLite AR-1) making for a very lightweight firearm. Only a small number of AR-9 prototypes were ever produced.
